The three main types of carbohydrates:
The usable form of energy for carbohydrates is glucose.
All carbohydrates are eventually digested and broken down into glucose.
The major difference is how easily or quickly our body can convert that carbohydrate into glucose.
Simple (Sugar) –These carbohydrates are already in sugar form when they hit the body.
They require less digestion and enter the bloodstream almost immediately as glucose.
Fiber –
There are a few types of fiber (soluble and insoluble).
Generally fiber is considered carbohydrates that we cannot break down into sugar.
That’s why carb-counting diet allow you to “subtract” fiber for those “NET” fiber counts.
Complex (Starch) –
These carbohydrates are things like rice, potatoes, oats, quinoa, and other foods.
They contain more complex molecules that require additional digestion to convert them into glucose.
Each type of carbohydrate is different and has a separate impact on our health.
